Regulate

Understanding your stress load, your sensory needs and the practices that help you settle.

Regulation is not calm on demand. It is understanding what your load actually is, what tips you over, and what genuinely helps you come back.

For sensory seekers and neurodivergent people especially, this is often less about doing less and more about doing it in a way that fits your nervous system.

Why this foundation matters

Healthdirect describes stress as something that builds up across life circumstances rather than arriving from a single cause — which is why noticing the load matters.

Knowing your own early signals gives you far more choice than trying to push through until you cannot.

What can make this difficult in real life

  • Financial pressure, unsafe situations, discrimination and caring responsibilities you cannot simply put down.
  • Sensory environments — noise, lighting, crowds, open-plan offices — that are draining before anything else happens.
  • Boundaries that cost you something real when you set them.
  • Being praised for coping, until coping becomes the expectation.

Three gentle starting points

Name your early signals

Jaw, shoulders, shortened patience, a busier mind. Knowing your own first signs is the practical skill.

Learn what settles you

Pressure, warmth, movement, water, quiet, texture, music, being outside. Your list belongs to you, not to a wellness trend.

Practise one small boundary

A later reply, a shorter visit, one thing declined kindly. Small ones are how the skill grows.

Try this today

Choose one thing that reliably settles you and give it five minutes today, before you feel you have earned it.

Reflection questions

  • “What is currently taking the most from me?”
  • “What are my first signs of being close to my limit?”
  • “What helps me settle that I already know about but rarely make time for?”

When further support may be helpful

If you feel persistently overwhelmed, numb, panicked or unsafe, please speak with your GP or a mental health practitioner. Beyond Blue is available on 1300 22 4636, and Lifeline on 13 11 14. In an emergency, call 000.
