Rooted in Care: Why Wild Wellness Supports Rainforest Rescue

Wellbeing is not separate from nature. This is the story of why giving back to the rainforest feels like a natural part of Wild Wellness.

A timber boardwalk winding through lush Far North Queensland rainforest.

Last October, I travelled to Cairns and Far North Queensland for a holiday. I expected beauty. I did not expect the place to follow me home.

There was something about being surrounded by rainforest, mountains and water—something ancient, alive and so much bigger than me. It was a reminder I already knew, but perhaps needed to feel again: our own wellbeing has never been separate from the wellbeing of the natural world.

Wild Wellness is rooted in plants, traditional herbal wisdom and a deep respect for nature. As this little business grows, I want giving back to be woven into its foundations—not something saved for “one day”.

“Wellbeing is not separate from nature.”

A quiet, continuing commitment

Wild Wellness with Sarah is proud to be a Rainforest Rescue Business Backer. Through Wild Wellness, I make an ongoing monthly donation to help support Rainforest Rescue’s work to protect and restore rainforests.

This is not a one-off campaign, and it is not a promise attached to a single product or purchase. It is a quiet, continuing commitment: one small business choosing to contribute regularly to work that matters.

Protect. Restore. Grow.

Since 1999, Rainforest Rescue has worked to safeguard precious rainforest habitat through practical conservation. Its work is often described through three connected actions: protecting rainforest, planting rainforest, and propagating and growing the native trees needed for long-term restoration.

Protect a rainforest

Rainforest Rescue purchases vulnerable, high-conservation-value rainforest properties and secures them for conservation, helping preserve habitat and reconnect fragmented areas.

Plant a rainforest

Their restoration teams replant cleared and degraded land with diverse local native species, rebuilding habitat and wildlife corridors over time.

Cow Bay Native Nursery — Propagate and grow

At the Cow Bay Native Nursery in the Daintree, seeds and cuttings are carefully raised into the trees that will become tomorrow’s rainforest.

At the time of writing, Rainforest Rescue reports that it has rescued 46 properties in the Daintree and planted more than 408,000 rainforest trees in Australia. Those figures are extraordinary, but the deeper story is what they represent: land protected from development, native seedlings taking root, habitat becoming connected again, and future generations inheriting something living.

When rainforest returns, life returns

One of the most beautiful examples is NightWings, a 15-hectare former sugarcane property south of the Daintree River. More than 115,000 trees from over 150 species have been planted there, transforming open cane fields into young rainforest.

The project was designed not simply to put trees in the ground, but to rebuild a functioning ecosystem. Many of the species were selected for their fruit, helping draw birds and flying foxes back into the landscape so they can carry seeds and accelerate natural regeneration.

Then came a remarkable sign of return: juvenile Southern Cassowaries were sighted at NightWings in 2018 and again in 2022—the first recorded south of the Daintree River in more than 40 years. Restoration is slow work, but moments like this show what patient, informed care can make possible.

Growing tomorrow’s rainforest

The Cow Bay Native Nursery is another quietly powerful part of the story. Designed as the Daintree’s largest native plant nursery, it has the capacity to grow up to 150,000 trees a year when fully operational—enough to support restoration across almost 25 hectares annually.

A rainforest cannot be rebuilt from a handful of generic species. The nursery propagates a broad diversity of plants suited to the local ecosystem, from carefully collected seed through to planting-ready trees. It is patient, detailed work: the kind that recognises restoration as a relationship with place, not a quick visual fix.

Care rooted in Country

Rainforest Rescue’s Daintree work takes place on Eastern Kuku Yalanji Bubu. The organisation works with conservation partners including the Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation, the registered Cultural Heritage Body for Eastern Kuku Yalanji Bama.

That matters deeply. A respectful relationship with plants and place must also include respect for Traditional Custodians, living culture and knowledge. Conservation is strongest when it is built through enduring relationships with the people who have cared for Country across generations.

Why this belongs at Wild Wellness

Wild Wellness celebrates plants every day—through herbal medicine, teas, balms and small rituals that invite us to slow down. But botanicals are not simply ingredients on a label. They come from living systems: soil, water, seasons, pollinators, forests and generations of human knowledge.

For me, it would feel incomplete to speak about wellbeing while ignoring the health of the natural world that makes wellbeing possible.

Supporting Rainforest Rescue is one way Wild Wellness can put its values into practice. It does not solve every environmental challenge, and I do not want to dress a small contribution up as something larger than it is. What it does offer is consistency. Month after month, it joins the support of many others behind land protection, restoration, native plant propagation and long-term care.

“A botanical business should give something back.”

Small actions. Lasting care.

Rainforest restoration is measured in years and decades, not marketing moments. A seed is collected. A tree is raised. A degraded patch is planted. Canopies begin to meet. Wildlife finds a path through. A place starts to breathe differently.

That timescale feels beautifully aligned with Wild Wellness. Real wellbeing is rarely created by one dramatic gesture. It is nurtured through small, thoughtful actions repeated with care.

This partnership is part of that philosophy: wild by nature, mindful by choice.
